Building a Prom Setting – Start With the Model
It sounds like a great idea- cardboard waves ringing the dance
floor to carry out the theme of “under the sea.” But with prom night
less than twenty-four hours away, it’s discovered that the cardboard
carefully hoarded over the past few weeks won’t stand up. Each time
someone walks by, the breeze from their passing is enough to make the
entire ocean fall like so many dominoes. Building a prom setting is
never an easy task, but having everything set up well ahead of time
will give the prom committee and those working on the set plenty of
time to work on problems.
Building a prom setting doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking, but even
the smallest effort can encounter problems. Stars can be too heavy for
the strings that were to suspend them from the ceiling, glitter can
fail to stick to its intended surface or crepe paper can tear
unexpectedly.
Keeping the set simple is one way to be sure that building the prom
scene doesn’t become an insurmountable obstacle. While it might seem
like a great idea to have an elaborate setting for the prom, the
reality is that you might end up with a less-than-attractive setting
because many of the ideas simply didn’t work out. The less actual
construction needed, the better the chances for success.
One important part of the building process for a successful prom is the
photograph area. Dressing up an area, then setting that area aside for
photographs is an important prom tradition. That particular place will
usually require a backboard or at least a backdrop. Again, practicing
with the designs suggested is important to be sure the area works well.
Imagine the problems if the backboard turns out to be unstable and
can’t even be used.
Almost any idea can be carried out, but finding an idea that works
easily and well will make building the prom set a complete success –
just as the prom was meant to be.
